Quick answer
As of October 31, 2026, Function Health publishes no dollar amount for its New York and New Jersey lab fee, on top of its $365 membership, while Superpower charges New York and New Jersey members double its national $199. Function's own pages say only that testing there "can cost more due to state regulations" (Function FAQ). Of the services that publish a New York price, Empirical Health is cheapest per measured marker.

So is Function worth it in New York or New Jersey? You cannot know the full price until Function walks you through it at scheduling. Below: what Function says, why the fee exists, every published New York and New Jersey price we found, and what each costs per measured marker. Our New York page and New Jersey page show every provider's status, and the full ranking is on the best blood tests page.

What Function says about New York and New Jersey

Function's FAQ answers the question in one line: "Testing in New York and New Jersey can cost more due to state regulations. We will walk you through any details that apply to you during scheduling." (Function FAQ).

Its terms explain where the extra money goes. Where "laboratory billing requirements require laboratory services to be billed separately (including, without limitation, New York and New Jersey), some or all laboratory testing fees are not included in the Subscription fee" (Function terms of service). Those fees "may be billed directly to you by the applicable third-party laboratory" (same terms).

The FAQ footer says the same about price: the membership "includes full access to 160+ lab tests, with a leading nationwide provider, in all states except New York and New Jersey" (Function FAQ).

None of these pages give an amount. Figures in circulation come from rivals and forum posts. Empirical Health's blog, for example, says "Recent threads on Reddit show Function costs about" a higher figure in New York (Empirical Health blog). A competitor citing Reddit is not a source for Function's price, so we do not quote a number. If you have a Function scheduling quote for New York or New Jersey, the bill comes from the lab, and you can ask for it in writing before the draw.

Why New York and New Jersey cost more

New York restricts how labs bill. Public Health Law section 586 bars a clinical lab from billing anyone other than the patient or certain permitted payers for its tests (NY Public Health Law 586). A membership company paying Quest on your behalf does not fit that list, so the lab bills you directly instead.

New York also limits direct-access testing more generally. A 2015 settlement between the state attorney general and the lab-order seller DirectLabs says "New York law generally prohibits such" direct-access testing (NY Attorney General, AOD 15-168). That is why lab-test stores such as Ulta, Walk-In Lab and Labcorp OnDemand do not sell there at all. Memberships still work, because a clinician orders each test; the extra cost is the separate lab bill. Mito puts it this way: "In New York and New Jersey, prices include a fee to cover the state's compliance and handling requirements." (Mito FAQ).

New Jersey works the same way in practice: every lab-test store we track excludes it, and the memberships that sell there either charge more or say the lab bills a fee. Our ordering your own blood test guide covers the state rules in more detail.

Two readings of the table. Without a fee, Function would be the cheapest per marker in New York, at $3.69. With any fee, it moves up, and you only find out how far at scheduling. Empirical is the cheapest published New York price per measured marker, but it is a one-time, heart-focused panel with fewer hormone markers. Quest's store is the only lab-run panel sold to New Yorkers without a membership, because Quest's help center lists only Arizona, Hawaii and Puerto Rico as excluded: "Lab tests at questhealth.com are currently not available in Arizona, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico." (Quest help center).

Is Function worth it in New York or New Jersey?

It depends on a number Function will not publish. Function measures 99 markers by our count and draws twice a year, more than anything else in the table. If your scheduling quote keeps the total close to the national price, it stays strong value. If the lab bill pushes it well past Superpower's doubled price, Empirical or Quest's Elite panel cost less per measured marker. Ask for the lab fee before you book the first draw, since Function's FAQ says it "does not offer refunds for prior payments" (Function FAQ).

Questions

FAQ

How much does Function Health cost in New York?

Function's membership is $365 a year, and New York members can also be billed lab fees directly by the lab. Function does not publish the amount on its FAQ, pricing page or terms, as read on October 31, 2026. It says it will walk you through the details during scheduling, so ask for the figure then.

Why does Function cost more in New Jersey?

Function's terms say that where lab billing rules require it, "including, without limitation, New York and New Jersey", some or all lab fees are not part of the subscription and may be billed by the lab. Rules on who a lab may bill stop the membership company from paying the lab for you.

What is New York Public Health Law 586?

Section 586 of New York's Public Health Law limits who a clinical laboratory may bill for its tests, generally the patient or certain permitted payers. A membership company paying the lab does not fit, so the lab bills the member directly. That is the main reason memberships cost more there.

Can I order my own blood test in New York?

Not through lab-test stores, which do not sell in New York. Quest's own store does, with its physician network ordering the test. Memberships such as Function, Superpower and Empirical also sell in New York, at higher or partly unpublished prices.

Which blood test membership is cheapest in New York?

Among services that publish a New York price, Empirical Health's heart panel costs least per measured marker, followed by Quest's Elite Health Profile and Superpower. Function might beat them all if its lab fee is small, but the fee is not published.

Is Function Health available in every state?

No. Function is not sold in Rhode Island, Hawaii or Puerto Rico, per its FAQ. New York and New Jersey are served, with lab fees billed separately.
