Comparison
"Cheaper than Function" can mean a lower yearly bill or a lower price per marker actually measured. The two give different winners, so the table below shows both, with what each plan leaves out. Function itself is reviewed in our Function Health review, and every plan is ranked on the best blood tests page.
Every alternative, side by side
Price per year at the plan's own cadence. Measured markers are our count, with calculated ratios taken out. Each figure renders from our price data, read on each provider's page.
| Plan | Price | Measured markers | Per measured marker | Draws a year | Clinician reviews results | What it leaves out |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Function Health | $365 a year | 99 | $3.69 | 2 | Yes | Not sold in RI or HI |
| Empirical Health | $190 one time | 66 | $2.88 | 1 | Physician-written report | Hormones, cortisol, insulin |
| Mito Health Core | $276.75 non-member (Mito) | 78 | $3.74 with the $15 Quest draw fee | 1 | Yes | Plus a $15 draw fee per Quest visit (Mito FAQ) |

Cheaper per measured marker
Empirical Health is the only membership-style panel below Function per measured marker that includes both ApoB and Lp(a). Its page sells it as "100 biomarkers. Interpreted by a physician. Results in days." (Empirical). Our count is lower, because nine of its 100 are diet-log metrics, four are questionnaires and two are modelled risk scores. It is a one-time payment, not a renewing membership. New York and New Jersey add a published lab fee; our New York cost guide has the figure. Head to head: Function vs Empirical.
Mito Health sells Quest, Labcorp and BioReference panels at the lab's price, which is why its single tests are the lowest we track. The catch is a fee you see late: "The price at checkout includes the tests or panels in your cart, plus a lab draw fee for each lab visit." (Mito FAQ). The same FAQ now names the fee for each lab, and the table above includes the Quest fee in Mito's cost per marker. Head to head: Function vs Mito.
Maximus Optimal comes out low per marker, but it has trade-offs. Its ApoB line is "Estimated ApoB (Hwang Equation)" (Maximus labs page), a formula applied to the lipid panel, so we count it as calculated. No clinician reviews the panel, and it does not sell in New York, New Jersey or Rhode Island.
- Names its lab (Quest Diagnostics)
- Clinician review
- 48 states (not RI, HI)
Cheaper per year, but not per marker
Superpower has the lowest yearly membership price outside New York and New Jersey, and lands level with Function per measured marker because it measures fewer markers from one draw. Lp(a), homocysteine and PSA cost extra. Our Superpower review covers the count dispute and the doubled New York price, and Function vs Superpower lines them up.
Labs by Hims costs a little less than Function and also draws twice a year, but measures fewer markers per person. Its seller is not a HIPAA covered entity, which our privacy comparison explains.
Lab-store panels: no membership
If you want one draw and no renewal, Quest's and Labcorp's own stores and Ulta Lab Tests sell broad panels. Quest adds a "Physician Service Fee" to every order of its Elite profile (Quest Elite Health Profile). None of the three includes Lp(a), and Ulta's panel leaves out ApoB. Adding the missing tests one by one is often cheaper than a second panel; our cheapest full blood panel guide prices an 11-test core set store by store, and Quest vs Labcorp OnDemand compares the two lab stores.
What is not a real alternative
- At-home kits such as SiPhox and Rythm measure a few dozen markers from a finger or upper-arm sample. They suit tracking a handful of markers often, not replacing a broad yearly panel. See at-home blood test kits compared.
- InsideTracker costs more than Function in its first year, measures fewer markers and has no clinician review. Our InsideTracker review has the details.
- Lifeforce pairs testing with clinician consults at a much higher yearly cost. It is a care program, not a cheaper panel.
- Single-marker kits answer one question each. Fine for an ApoB or Lp(a) check, not a baseline.
How to choose
If you want the broadest panel twice a year with a clinician summary, Function is still the reference point at $3.69 per measured marker. If you want a one-time heart-focused baseline for less, Empirical. If you want the lowest yearly membership bill outside New York and New Jersey, Superpower. If you already know which tests you want, a lab store. All plans are on our price page and the biomarker coverage table.
Questions
FAQ
What are the best Function Health alternatives?
By cost per measured marker, Empirical Health is the strongest full alternative, at $2.88 against Function's $3.69, with ApoB and Lp(a) included. Superpower is cheapest per year outside New York and New Jersey. Lab-store panels from Quest, Labcorp and Ulta suit people who want one draw and no membership.
Is there anything cheaper than Function Health?
Yes. Empirical, Superpower, Maximus Optimal, Labs by Hims and Mito's Essential and Core panels all cost less per year. Only Empirical, Mito and Maximus also cost less per measured marker, and Mito adds a per-visit draw fee on top.
Is Empirical Health better than Function Health?
Empirical costs less per measured marker and includes a physician-written report, but it draws once, focuses on heart and metabolic markers and skips hormones and insulin. Function draws twice and measures more. The better pick depends on whether you need the breadth.
Is Mito Health cheaper than Function?
Per panel, yes: Mito's Essential and Core panels list below Function's yearly price. Mito adds a per-visit draw fee, which its FAQ now publishes for each lab, and member prices need a separate yearly membership. Compare the all-in checkout total before deciding.
What is the cheapest Function Health alternative in New York?
Among services that publish a New York price, Empirical Health costs least per measured marker. Function's own New York lab fee is not published. Our New York cost guide lists every published state price.
Do Function Health alternatives take HSA or FSA?
Most say they do. Empirical, Superpower, Mito and the lab stores state HSA or FSA payment on their own pages; Labs by Hims and Maximus do not say. Our [HSA and FSA guide](/guides/hsa-fsa-blood-tests) quotes each provider.
