What Is a Lipid Panel? What It Measures and What It Costs
A lipid panel measures total, LDL and HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. What each one is, which services include it, and the cheapest way to order one yourself.

Cost
This page explains what the panel measures and where to buy it. It does not explain what your numbers mean: reference ranges differ from lab to lab, and reading a result is a clinician's job. For every service ranked, see the best blood tests page; to see which plans include each heart marker, use our biomarker comparison.
What it measures
Cholesterol travels in the blood inside particles called lipoproteins, and a lipid panel reports how much cholesterol sits in each main kind. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute calls the test a lipoprotein panel and says it "measures the levels of LDL and HDL cholesterol and triglycerides in your blood" (NHLBI).
| Component | What it is, in plain terms | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Total cholesterol | All the cholesterol in your blood, LDL, HDL and VLDL together | Labcorp OnDemand |
| LDL cholesterol | Cholesterol carried by low-density lipoprotein, often called the bad kind because it can build up in artery walls | MedlinePlus |
| HDL cholesterol | Cholesterol carried by high-density lipoprotein, often called the good kind because it helps clear LDL | MedlinePlus |
| Triglycerides | A type of fat in your blood, carried mostly by VLDL particles | MedlinePlus |
| VLDL cholesterol | Cholesterol carried by very low-density lipoprotein; most labs estimate it from triglycerides | MedlinePlus |
| Non-HDL cholesterol (some labs) | Total cholesterol minus HDL, a calculated line rather than a separate measurement | MedlinePlus |
Measured or calculated?
Only some of those lines are measured directly. On LDL, MedlinePlus explains: "This means that your LDL level is an estimate based on your total cholesterol, HDL, and triglycerides" (MedlinePlus). On VLDL, it says "a lab can use your triglycerides level to estimate your VLDL level" (MedlinePlus). Some labs measure LDL directly instead. Our coverage tables count calculated lines as calculated, so a plan cannot inflate its marker count by printing a ratio.
What a lipid panel does not include
A standard lipid panel does not measure ApoB or Lp(a), two heart tests that some memberships add on top. Each has its own price guide: ApoB test cost and Lp(a) test cost. It also does not measure blood sugar; that is the hemoglobin A1c test or the glucose line in a CMP.
Where to get it and what it costs
Lab-test stores sell a lipid panel on its own, with a physician order included, and send you to a Quest or Labcorp patient center for the draw. Some at-home brands, such as Everlywell, LetsGetChecked and myLAB Box, also sell a mail-in kit. The table lists each seller's price, cheapest first, the fee it adds per order, and the memberships and panels that include a full lipid panel:
| Store | Lipid panel on its own | Per-order fee | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mito Health | $7.42 | $15 | 2026-10-31 |
| Marek Health | $9 | $10, free over $199 | 2026-10-31 |
| Ulta Lab Tests | $22.95 | $12.95 | 2026-10-31 |
| Walk-In Lab | $33 | $6 | 2026-10-31 |
| Request A Test | $39 | $4 | 2026-10-31 |
| Everlywell | $49 | $15 | 2026-10-31 |
| Personalabs | $51 | none published | 2026-10-31 |
| Labcorp OnDemand | $59 | none published | 2026-10-31 |
| Quest | $59 | $6 | 2026-10-31 |
| LetsGetChecked | $89 | none published | 2026-10-31 |
| myLAB Box | $89 | none published | 2026-10-31 |
List prices from each store's own page. Memberships and panels that include it: Function Health, Superpower, Empirical Health, Mito Health, Labs by Hims, Maximus, Everlywell, Quest, Ulta Lab Tests, SiPhox Health, Rythm Health.
Three things decide what you actually pay:
- The per-order fee can cost more than the panel. On list price, Mito Health and Marek Diagnostics are the lowest, but both add a lab draw fee. Put every test you want in one order so you pay that fee once.
- A kit costs more than a draw. The at-home kits in the table cost several times what the cheapest lab stores charge, fee included. They save you a trip, not money.
- Your state decides whether you can buy at all. Lab-test stores do not sell in New York, New Jersey or Rhode Island; our guide to ordering your own blood test explains the rules.
If you want a lipid panel inside a broad yearly panel, most broad memberships include one. Function Health costs $365 a year and measures 99 markers; Superpower costs $199. Our lab order price page ranks one-time panels by cost per measured marker, and our guide to blood test cost without insurance prices a lipid panel next to six other common tests.
- Names its lab (Quest Diagnostics)
- Clinician review
- 48 states (not RI, HI)
Already have your results?
LifeFrom, a sister app from the team behind this site, can keep your results in one place and explain them in plain language (LifeFrom). It is our own product, so weigh that when you read this. For what a specific number means for you, ask the clinician who ordered the test or your own doctor.
Questions
FAQ
Do I need to fast before a lipid panel?
Often, yes. MedlinePlus says "You may need to fast (not eat or drink) for 9 to 12 hours before your blood cholesterol test" ([MedlinePlus](https://medlineplus.gov/lab-tests/cholesterol-levels/)), and Labcorp's instructions are "Fast for 12 hours (no food or drink, except water)" ([Labcorp OnDemand](https://www.ondemand.labcorp.com/content/labcorp-ondemand/us/en/lab-tests/cholesterol-test-lipid-panel)). Follow the instructions on your own order.
Is a lipid panel the same as a cholesterol test?
Yes. MedlinePlus lists the other names for a cholesterol test as "Lipid profile, Lipid panel" ([MedlinePlus](https://medlineplus.gov/lab-tests/cholesterol-levels/)). NHLBI calls it a lipoprotein panel.
Is a lipid panel included in Function Health or Superpower?
Yes. Both memberships include a full lipid panel, as do Quest's broad health panels, Ulta's Baseline panels and SiPhox's plans. The memberships line under the price table lists every plan we track that includes it.
Can I order a lipid panel without a doctor?
Yes, in most states. The store's own physician signs the order; Labcorp says "no healthcare provider visit is required" ([Labcorp OnDemand](https://www.ondemand.labcorp.com/content/labcorp-ondemand/us/en/lab-tests/cholesterol-test-lipid-panel)). Lab-test stores do not sell in New York, New Jersey or Rhode Island.
How long do lipid panel results take?
Labcorp OnDemand quotes "1 day from when your sample arrives at our lab" ([Labcorp OnDemand](https://www.ondemand.labcorp.com/content/labcorp-ondemand/us/en/lab-tests/cholesterol-test-lipid-panel)). Mail-in kits take longer, because the sample has to travel to the lab first.
What should my cholesterol numbers be?
We do not publish targets. Each lab prints its own reference range, and MedlinePlus notes that the right level for a person "may depend on your age, family history, lifestyle, and other risk factors for heart disease" ([MedlinePlus](https://medlineplus.gov/lab-tests/cholesterol-levels/)). That is a conversation for your clinician.
